ABOUT THE YELLOW ART BOOK

THE IDEA

The Yellow Art Book began in 2021 with a simple observation: I couldn't find the kind of Visual Arts resource library I wanted as an MYP teacher.

THE DREAM

After many years as an artist and art educator, I realised that my dream was to have a studio of my own in a beautiful place — a space where I could make artwork, lead workshops and create art education content.

I don't have that studio yet.

For now, I make art from home and rent or borrow studio spaces when I run workshops. But the idea of bringing these two worlds together has stayed with me.

I wanted to bring my two worlds together: my practice as an artist and my work as an art educator.

The Yellow Art Book grew from that idea — and perhaps, in some small way, is helping me build towards the studio I imagine.

THE PRACTICE

I am an interdisciplinary artist and Visual Arts educator with experience teaching in international school settings and other cultural institutions. My practice spans painting, drawing, sculpture and mixed-media, alongside years of teaching, curriculum development and writing about Visual Arts education.

The Yellow Art Book brings these two sides of my practice together: the experience of the classroom and the perspective of the studio.

THE LIBRARY

I moved home and started writing in an attic — rather like the beginning of a slightly improbable American movie about people in their thirties starting over.

For nearly four years, I wrote without earning anything from it. But I loved it.

It gave me the time and space to focus on the things I had never had enough time to create while working full-time as a teacher: resources, ideas, writing, research and all the visual arts education ideas that had been gathering in my head for years.

The Library grew from there.

THE COMMUNITY

Teaching art can often feel like a solo effort, especially in smaller departments. That's why community matters so much.

There are already wonderful online spaces where art teachers connect, share resources and collaborate, and I hope The Yellow Art Book becomes another welcoming corner of that wider community.
